What image did Daniel see in a vision in that night? Daniel 2:31-35 says, “Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.”
When Nebuchadnezzar dreamed a dream his spirit was trouble and he required his people to interpret his dream. The following passage is the details of Nebuchadnezzar’s demand from his people. We read in Daniel 2:2-9 says, “Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king. And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation. The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill. But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof. They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it. The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me. But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.” Many students of God’s Word have confused what the king Nebuchadnezzar said to these magicians. Did he really forget what he dreamed? It is surely not. But because that dream was troubled him so much, he desired the Chaldeans magicians to tell him the dream and its interpretation. King Nebuchadnezzar was not absentminded or stupid person. For the word “the things” in verses 5 and 8 in Aramic means ‘decree.’ He knew what the Lord told him and unforgettable but he wanted to know the meaning and interpretation of this dream. And the Chaldeans physicians answered Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2:10-11, “The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean. And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.” As Nebuchadnezzar wanted to kill all the magicians including Daniel for he was one of the magicians, God revealed that dream and its interpretation to Daniel in a vision at a night.
Having known the dream and its interpretation Daniel came to the king to tell that message for his God has revealed the dream to him. Daniel 2:19-24 says, “Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him. I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter. Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of
Now this is the meaning of the dream that the Lord told Daniel. Daniel 2:36-38 saying, “This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.” We should not undermine king Nebuchadnezzar because he was the head of the gold and he was the number one. Although he was not the king of the whole world but he was a great king that ever known in this world.
King Nebuchadnezzar was so great even before he was a king, because the Lord had predicted about him and his power. As we read in the book of Jeremiah 27:5-7 when God had spoken about Nebuchadnezzar long time before he was born to this world. The Lord said this word saying, “I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me. And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of
In the dream, Nebuchadnezzar saw the great image as we read in Daniel 2:31-35 says, “Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone the smote the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.” What is the meaning of this great image? The followings are a brief interpretation of this great image from man’s perspective.
When king Nebuchadnezzar died, he was succeeded by another person whom Nebuchadnezzar did not know as mentioned in Daniel 2:39. This person was not from the same kingdom but from another who defeated the
After the second kingdom, then arose the third kingdom which was the kingdom of brass, “which shall bear rule over all the earth” (Daniel 2:39). This was the
After the third kingdom, there would be the fourth kingdom which was as strong as iron. We read in Daniel 2:40-43, “And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.” What kingdom was this that would conquer the four kingdoms under the generals of Alexander the great? It was the
After the fourth kingdom, there would be the fifth kingdom that would be last forever. This kingdom would be the greatest of all kingdoms that ever known since the existence of the earth. The question is when will it be happened? Daniel 2:44-45 says, “And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.”
Who is this stone that will break all the kingdoms that ever exist? He is the stone from heaven namely Jesus Christ. He will destroy all the gold, the silver, the brass, and the iron mixed with clay. We may ask this question, when king Medo-Persia defeated the
Fifty years had passed since the event of Daniel ,2 and king Nebuchadnezzar had already died when the Lord gave a dream to Daniel in Daniel 7. In comparison, Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and Daniel’s, there are great similarities in which we can see in Daniel 2 and 7. On the other hand there are also basic differences in these two chapters.
What are the similarities of these two chapters? The similarities are, firstly, in Daniel 2 there are four kingdoms followed by the fifth great
Beside the similarities we notice also the differences which are greater then similarities because in Daniel 7 there is no dream comes to the king anymore but rather directly to Daniel the prophet. Thus on this study we need to see from God’s perspective and not from man’s perspective.
The great image that God shows to Nebuchadnezzar was designed to impress him deeply how brilliant and great Nebuchadnezzar was. However in Daniel 7 there is no as such intention at all because the dream God revealed to His own prophet, Daniel alone. What the Lord has shown to Nebuchadnezzar was man’s perspective in this world empire but to the prophet Daniel God showed His own perspective. Another important difference is that although fifty years had passed, the Lord gave to Daniel more and deeply details of the succession of the empire one after the other with special focus on the fourth empire which depicted with the horrible beast with iron teeth. This beast does not only have ten horns but eleven and the eleventh horn will turn up to Satan’s masterpiece. Absolutely this is not mentioned in Daniel 2.
Daniel 7:1-4 says, “In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters. Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it.” In verse 4 it says, “The first was like a lion.” This was referring to the Babylonian kingdom namely king Nebuchadnezzar. However in the same verse we notice something happened to this lion. The Lord took the power and might of Nebuchadnezzar, to chop his pride to the ground in his final days on this earth. This was the time king Nebuchadnezzar was still an unbeliever. However, before he died, Nebuchadnezzar lifted up his heart and gave praise to the Lord of heaven. He was no longer a beast but a man in God’s image. That might mean that he accepted the Lord as the Saviour and we will meet him in heaven.
In Daniel 7:5 we notice another kingdom which is described as another beast. We read, “And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh.” “The second, like to a bear” means another kingdom after the lion namely Medo-Persia Empire. This Medo-Persia Empire was powerful and devours one kingdom after another, namely the
In Daniel 7:6 there is another beast which describes another kingdom. “After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.” The leopard mentioned here was referring to the third kingdom namely the Greek kingdom which is under the king Alexander the great. He was the fastest of all and he conquered the world in ten years. In this verse also we notice that this beast has four heads. This is to say that after the Alexander the great died, his kingdom would be divided into four kingdoms under his four generals.
Daniel 7:7 says, “After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.” The fourth kingdom mentioned here was the Roman kingdom. The
Daniel 7:8 is a very significant to understand that though we cannot identify who are those ten horns and yet we ask a question, Who is this 'the eleventh horn'? As we read, “I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.” Most commentators understand the little horn which is the eleventh horn is referring to the Antichrist that will come up after the ten horns are in power.
Daniel 7:15-20 we see the similar feeling of Daniel and king Nabuchadnezzar when he had a dream. When Nabuchadnezzar saw a dream and he could not sleep for he was disturbed. As for Daniel, he was grieved in spirit but Daniel received the meaning of his dream in the same night. As we read, “I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet; And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.”
Daniel 7:23-24, “Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.” In verse 24 we notice that there will be ten horns, which means ten kings come out from the fourth kingdom. Then we ask this question, is it possible that ten kings will come out from the
In Daniel 9 is recorded the program of God on what He will do at the end of this world before the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. We see in Daniel 9 the seventy weeks of Daniel which is so significant in knowing what will happen to this world. This “seventy weeks of Daniel” is the decree upon the people of
While Jesus was still in the midst of the people of Israel, Jesus knew what will happen to the nation of Israel. That is why He said, “I have come in my Father’s name and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive”(John 5:43). Jesus was referring to the coming Antichrist who will rule the world and
One may ask a question, how will the antichrist come to this earth? Jesus Christ will send him. In Revelation 4-6 we notice that the Lord Jesus Christ will open the seven seals. The Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb will open the first seal and the first horseman of the four horsemen in the apocalyptic. So Jesus is the One who says “come and see” in Revelation 6:1 and the antichrist is sent by Him. So the Son of God sends the son of Satan who is riding on the white horse pretending as if he is Christ and he will conquer the world. During that time the apostate churches will achieve its goal of the denial of doctrines and organisation of unity in alliance with the beast.
However when the antichrist arises again, he will say he is the one who destroys the entire enemy by bringing fire down from heaven. The antichrist will set up in the temple an image of himself that can speak and live under the jurisdiction of the Jews, and the false prophet and men who do not worship him will be killed. The abomination and desolation as described by Jesus Christ in Matthew 24:15 will happen. The antichrist will force all men to worship him.
Daniel 9:25 tells us the story of the last horrible three and half years of the 70th year week of Daniel. “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” The antichrist will break his covenant with
In Daniel 9:26-27 we read, “But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.” Jesus Christ will come from heaven above and according to 2 Thessalonians 2 that He will destroy the beast with the breath of his mouth and by the brightness of His coming. Isaiah 27:1 describes the beast that “In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.” God will deal with the antichrist. However consider this question; do we know that the antichrist can be alive even today as the scripture says? Why? Because if Christ comes tomorrow, it means the antichrist has already been a grown man and immediately can make a covenant with
